Cellulose ethers

Cellulose ethers are derived from wood pulp or cotton linters by means of chemical modification.
BCD Chemie is a supplier of both non-ionic methyl cellulose as well as anionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, sodium salt).

Methyl cellulose

Methyl cellulose (MC) is applied in dispersion paints and dispersion-bound systems (adhesives, putties) as a rheological additive.
Apart from its rheology (thickening), another important property of methyl cellulose is that it prolongs the open time of dispersion paints. In liquid or paste-like systems, mainly unmodified and/or retarded methyl celluloses are used.

Methyl celluloses are also employed in cement-based systems such as plasters, tile adhesives, mortars and levelling compounds, as well as in gypsum systems.
Here, primarily modified methyl celluloses are used in the dry mix. The methyl celluloses regulate the workability, stability and water retention. When combined with starch, the properties of the building material system can be controlled to a wide extent.

Methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (MHEC) as well as methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose (MHPC) can be supplied in various granulometries, viscosities and modifications. Retarded soluble products for dispersion paints and dispersion-bound systems are also available.

Carboxymethyl cellulose

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has a wide range of applications in aqueous systems.
As a low-cost thickener, carboxymethyl cellulose is used in wall paints, as well as in highly alkaline silicate paints, in which CMC is stable compared to MC.

In the paper manufacturing process, CMC is used in sizing and coating colours – on the one hand, to adjust viscosity, and on the other, to improve water retention.
CMC acts as a soil carrier when used in laundry detergents and prevents the dissolved soil from settling on the fabric.

Carboxymethyl cellulose is also used in the sizing process in textile production, either as a component that increases viscosity or as a sizing that can simply be desized with water.
When used in drilling fluids, CMC regulates the flow properties of the drilling fluid and enhances the discharge of the drilling cuttings.
The adhesive properties of moist CMC are used in aqueous adhesives, especially in paper adhesives.

Carboxymethyl cellulose is available as technical and purified grade with a variety of granulometries and different viscosities.
